Turkey will support the invitation to Finland and Sweden to join the alliance during the NATO summit in Madrid, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö said. A memorandum to this effect was signed after a meeting with NATO General Jens Stoltenberg, Sweden’s Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Turkey had previously justified the blockade by saying that the two countries supported “terrorist organizations” such as the banned Kurdish Workers’ Party PKK and the Syrian Kurdish militia YPG – which both countries reject. Participated in the negotiations NATOSecretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
According to Finnish media reports, Erdogan, Niinistö and Andersson were working on a document aimed at addressing Turkey’s concerns about terrorism and the issue of arms exports.
According to its own account, Turkey not only called for the “support of terrorist organizations” to be stopped, but also for the extradition of several people suspected of being terrorists in Turkey. The lifting of an arms embargo was also called for.
More on that shortly.
