Floods and storm damage: Again, dozens of operations due to thunderstorms

The ZAMG experts were expecting heavy showers and thunderstorms from the afternoon onwards, although these shouldn’t be as severe as on Monday. And they should be right. Around 6:30 p.m., the storm front coming from Bavaria reached the Salzkammergut and the Innviertel, a little later thunder and lightning also hit the central area.

Large amounts of precipitation

Locally, large amounts of precipitation came together within a few minutes, which also caused smaller streams to burst their banks. In Schwarzenberg in the Bohemian Forest, for example, 30.8 mm were measured in just 30 minutes, 29.7 mm in Hellmonsödt and 26.6 mm in Linz.

As of 7:30 p.m., the state fire brigade command only reported isolated operations due to flooding. For example, in Offenhausen (Wels-Land district), Weibern (Grieskirchen district), Ottnang am Hausruck (Vöcklabruck district) and Hinterstoder (Kirchdorf an der Krems district), helpers went out to eliminate the floods. It was necessary to pump out flooded cellars and clear traffic routes again. In the Mühlviertel and Innviertel, the emergency services were also alerted to storm damage.

Dozens of firefighting operations

The number of assignments increased continuously. At around 8:15 p.m., the thunderstorms reached the Mühlviertel, and here, too, storm damage had to be dealt with. Around 50 alarms throughout Upper Austria were counted up to 9 p.m., some of which also involved extinguishing operations as a result of lightning strikes.

For example, lightning struck a haystack in Allerheiligen in Mühlkreis (Perg district), but the fire brigade was able to quickly give the all-clear. Compared to the previous day, the volume of work for the emergency services was limited overall. Nothing was known about major damage on Tuesday evening.
