Distance learning: Almost three times as many registrations

German, English, mathematics, sports and biology are the subjects in which there is a massive lack of teachers in Upper Austria’s compulsory schools. The situation in the Innviertel is particularly dramatic. In order to be able to fill all hours, teachers work overtime, pensioners are brought back or students are hired.

There are many reasons for the shortage: Due to the wave of retirements, a particularly large number of long-serving teachers are currently falling out of the system, while at the same time there are not enough young people to follow. The current number of registrations at the University of Education in Upper Austria is completely against the trend. They have almost tripled compared to 2020. At that time, 55 students started distance learning for teaching posts at elementary schools. More than 150 students have now registered for the coming academic year 2022/2023.

“The offer of distance learning is the answer to the everyday realities of the students. We can cope with professional, family and regional challenges much more easily,” says PH Upper Austria Rector Walter Vogel.

New cooperation

“In this country, we stand for the conviction that education is an opportunity for young people to equip themselves for their future. That’s why well-trained and committed teachers are needed,” says Deputy Governor and Education Officer Christine Haberlander (VP). “Teachers play an enormous role in the future of our country, impart knowledge and values and are role models at the same time.”

For the coming academic year, the Upper Austria University of Education has also entered into a partnership with the Vorarlberg University of Education. Distance learning is also offered here – 68 students have already applied for this.
