The construction site summer on the motorways: an overview

The high volume around Pentecost or Corpus Christi means that enormous traffic volumes can also be expected for the weekends in July and August, which will at least be at the pre-Corona level of 2019 or already clearly exceed it, Asfinag expects. The state infrastructure company wants to reduce the number of construction sites on travel routes in the interests of traffic flow.

Around 300 major projects are completed each year. According to the company itself, only projects with construction and safety requirements and tight schedules will be implemented from mid-June to mid-September. “If there are construction sites on important travel routes, then the construction measures are absolutely necessary and cannot be carried out at other times due to the work intensity or importance,” said Andreas Fromm, Managing Director of Asfinag Bau Management GmbH. Refurbishments in the summer also take place when it comes to urgent repairs that cannot be postponed, and time windows with less commuter traffic are also used in conurbations.

Basically, the same number of tracks as in the “normal” state is always available. The exception this summer is the Pyhrnautobahn (A9), where in Styria as in southern Upper Austria, for logistical reasons at tunnel construction sites, two-way traffic areas have been set up in sections with one lane in each direction. According to Asfinag, the primary cause of traffic jams and delays in summer travel is not construction work, but mostly accidents, breakdowns or simply too much traffic when holidaymakers set off at the same time.
