Panne delays new division of government departments

With the amendment to the federal ministries law, the competencies in the ÖVP government team are to be reorganized after the resignations of Elisabeth Köstinger and Margarete Schramböck in mid-May. The Ministry of Economic Affairs is integrated into the Department of Labor. In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture will be downsized: the tourism sector will move to the Ministry of Labor and the civil service agendas in turn to the Chancellery, where they will be overseen by the Youth State Secretariat. The Telekom division is moving to the Ministry of Finance, which also receives digitization from the Ministry of Economics.

Formally, however, this change has not yet been completed, and we have to wait further: “The law will not be passed today, it must be corrected first,” said Federal Council President Christine Schwarz-Fuchs (ÖVP) to the “UN”. Discussions between the parliamentary groups on how to proceed should take place on Wednesday, according to parliament on the APA.

The reason for the delay is an editorial error by the Parliamentary Directorate: At the end of May, the Constitutional Committee approved an amendment with the votes of the ÖVP and the Greens in order to improve individual passages. However, these changes were not incorporated into the version of the legal text that went to the plenary session of the National Council. The version adopted by the National Council was therefore incorrect. This now needs to be repaired. In order to pave the way for this, according to the UN report, the Federal Council should now object to the legislative decision of the National Council
