Nationwide, that was 2,320 more than yesterday and 1,611 more than on Wednesday of the previous week. The seven-day incidence per 100,000 inhabitants was again over 700 across Austria – 707.8 to be precise. Eleven corona deaths have been added since Tuesday. The development in hospital patients is particularly striking: 856 people were in hospital with Covid 19 disease on Wednesday, an increase of 204 within a week. The number of hospital patients rose by 14 compared to Tuesday. Of the 856 hospitalized, 47 were treated in intensive care units, the same number as the day before.
The eleven people who died from or with a Covid 19 disease were more than twice as many as died in connection with Covid on average in the past week. Within a week, 35 deaths were added, an average of five deaths per day. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, 18,779 people have died in connection with a coronavirus infection. The Health and Food Safety Agency reported 20,037 deaths as of Tuesday.
More than 96,000 active corona cases
Since the beginning of the pandemic there have been 4,415,953 confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections. 4,300,943 of them were registered as recovered. There were 96,231 active corona cases on Wednesday, 4,670 more than on Tuesday.
In the past 24 hours, 169,534 antigen and PCR tests were reported, of which 141,503 were meaningful PCR tests. 8.84 percent of those tests were positive, which was just above the seven-day average of 8.5 positive PCR tests per day.
Only a few are vaccinated
Only a few are vaccinated: 2,599 stitches were administered on Tuesday, of which only 118 were initial vaccinations. 5,560,504 people had a valid vaccination certificate on Wednesday, which was 61.9 percent of the population.
However, the Ministry of Health has been recalculating the vaccination rates since Wednesday and no longer based on the legal validity of the certificates. “From June 29, the vaccination rates will be calculated on the basis of the applicable medical recommendations (NIG recommendation). The NIG recommendation is a living document that is always adapted to the latest epidemiological developments,” said the Ministry of Health. This ensures “that the communicated vaccination rates are also continuously adapted to current epidemiological developments”. Major changes are not to be expected as a result, as the ministry assured: “Furthermore, the population was updated to April 1, 2022 (source: Statistics Austria). Due to these changes, the vaccination rate increases by a minimum of 0.5 percent.”
1,673 new infections in Upper Austria
Most new infections were in Vienna with 4,071. The federal capital already has a seven-day incidence of 1,163.6 – as the only federal state so far in the four-digit range. However, Vienna is still the federal state in which the most testing is done by far. More than half of the registered PCR tests came from the federal capital.
2,709 new infections were reported from Lower Austria (incidence 785.9). Upper Austria registered 1,673 new infections, Styria 1,446, Tyrol 821, Vorarlberg 565, Salzburg 543, Burgenland 411 and Carinthia 270. In all other federal states, the incidence was below the Austrian average.
