The parliament discussed since Saturday the request for the removal of the president due to the “serious political crisis and internal commotion” raised by the opposition party Union for Hope (UNES), the main one with 47 seats and related to the former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017).

“Despite the coup attempts, today the country’s institutions prevailed. It is clear who works for the political mafias,” said Guillermo Lasso. “Meanwhile, we continue to work for Ecuador,” added the 66-year-old former banker.

Dialogue for the protests, suspended

An hour earlier, the government suspended negotiations with the leader of the powerful Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie), Leonidas Isawhich drives the demonstrations indefinitely.

Lasso made the decision after a soldier was killed and 12 others were injured in an attack as part of a protest in the Amazon.

“We are not going to negotiate with those who holding Ecuador hostage“, affirmed the president, while the Conaie accused him of “authoritarianism, lack of will and incapacity” and warned that he will have to answer for “the consequences of his warmongering policy”.

A first face-to-face meeting between the indigenous movement and a government delegation, headed by the Minister of Government, Francisco Jiménez, took place for more than six hours last Monday in an attempt to defuse the crisis. But yesterday the official representation did not appear in response to the attack.

Night of violence in Quito

After the suspension of the negotiations in the Basilica of the National Vote in Quito, hundreds of indigenous people returned to protest in Quito. In groups they mobilized through the streets of the capital of Ecuador and as they passed the shops closed.

At night, demonstrators staged clashes with the security forces in the north of the city and were two police stations set on fire. “The irrationality in the protests is not understood. Ecuador needs Peace,” Interior Minister Patricio Carrillo said on Twitter.

The high cost of living fueled by the increase in fuel prices pushed thousands of protesters from their communities since June 13.

Guillermo Lasso, who drags a 17% acceptance but has military support, announced compensation, which the indigenous consider insufficient.
