36.7 degrees: Austria’s June temperature record exceeded again

However, the values were far removed from the all-time June record. So it stays at the 38.6 degrees that were measured on June 20, 2013 in Waidhofen/Ybbs, also in Lower Austria.

Big differences between West and East

Overall, the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) registered large differences between western and eastern Austria. In Lower Austria, Vienna and Burgenland it was around 35 degrees in places, further west mostly only between 20 and 26 degrees. A look at the maximum values (as of 4:50 p.m.) shows measuring points from the east after Deutsch-Altenburg, from Gänserndorf to Neusiedl am See, which still reached values above 35 degrees, Vienna-Innere Stadt registered 34.8 degrees. While there were still over 190 measuring stations with at least 30 degrees or more on Monday, their number is currently reduced to just over 60.

Ten days ago, on Sunday 19 June, temperatures in Austria approached the respective state records for June for the first time. And in Vorarlberg, the previous high was just exceeded: it was 36.5 degrees at 3:00 p.m. in Feldkirch. The provincial records for June remained unchanged at 36.5 degrees in Vorarlberg and 38.6 degrees in Lower Austria (Waidhofen/Ybbs 2013).

Severe damage from storms

None of these records as further milestones of the climate crisis are cause for celebration, the storms resulting from the extreme temperatures caused severe damage throughout Austria again and again throughout the month. During the night on Wednesday, the Villach area was a center of extreme weather. A man was also killed in a mudslide in meetings. In addition to Carinthia, the Salzburg Lungau was also badly affected. In Tamsweg, a civil defense alarm was triggered on Wednesday morning due to flooding, but the situation there eased again during the course of the day.
