The former union leader, who assumed the presidency in July of last year, faces a constant political instability which has led him to name up to four cabinets of ministers in the midst of social conflicts. Likewise, he has survived two impeachment attempts in the Congressdominated by opposition right-wing parties.
Peru Libre said that the request to Pedro Castillo for his “irrevocable resignation” from the group is because the president has promoted the “breakdown of the unit partisan” in Congress.
The party brought 37 lawmakers to Congress in last year’s elections, but after several resignations the bloc has been reduced to just 16 members. A few months ago, the vice president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, was expelled from the group.
Pedro Castillo, suspected of corruption
The Peruvian prosecutor’s office investigates Castillo’s relationship with an alleged plot of corruption in the concession of public works by his former Minister of Transport and Communications, Juan Silva, who is a fugitive from justice.
It is the first time that the prosecution investigates a president in full exercise for corruption cases. Before, the prosecutor’s office had carried out investigations of other presidents, but for actions committed before exercising the position of head of government.
Pedro Castillo has rejected all the accusations against him; and that he affirms that they are orchestrated by his opponents, minority parties in Congress and economic groups that do not accept that he won the elections and that is why they want to remove him from power.
