For three days, Upper Austria’s fire brigades have been in almost constant use: violent thunderstorms with squalls and heavy rain determined the weather in the country and challenged the emergency services. As reported, around 60 fire brigades with around 900 emergency services deployed on Tuesday evening and on Wednesday night for almost 100 operations, and on Monday more than 1,200 firefighters were deployed after heavy hailstorms.
More flooding and storm damage
During the course of Wednesday, isolated damage caused by the heavy rain had to be repaired. Around 5:30 p.m., a storm front moved over Upper Austria again and triggered numerous operations due to flooding and storm damage, especially in the eastern half of the state.
The districts of Linz-Land, Urfahr-Umwelt, Linz-Stadt, Freistadt and Perg were particularly affected. Isolated storm damage was also reported in the Kirchdorf, Steyr-Stadt and Steyr-Land districts. A total of around 70 fire brigades with around 1300 emergency services were required in 165 operations across Upper Austria on Wednesday evening. In the city of Linz, the professional fire brigade Linz and the four volunteer fire brigades of the city of Linz completed around 30 operations.
S10 closed, passenger train evacuated
Again, flooded basements had to be pumped out and traffic routes cleared. The S10 was also temporarily closed due to fallen trees. In the urban area of Freistadt, the storm covered several roofs, and additional fire brigades had to be alerted for support. Train traffic was also affected by the storms: between Kefermarkt and Selker-Neustadt, a passenger train had to be evacuated after storm damage.
The heavy rainfall also caused small bellies to burst their banks locally and led to flooded road sections. The levels of larger rivers also rose. A water level of 370 cm was reached at the local quay in Steyr at 7:10 p.m. The situation is constantly monitored here by the emergency services.
A dead man in Carinthia
The situation continued to be dramatic in parts of Salzburg and Carinthia. After a mudslide in meetings in Carinthia, one person was still considered missing. One man could only be recovered dead. In Tamsweg in Salzburg’s Lungau, a civil defense alarm was raised on Wednesday morning. The residents were asked to stay in the houses, not to enter underground garages and cellars and to keep away from the banks and bridges. The situation eased slightly in the early afternoon, and the civil defense alarm was lifted at 5:30 p.m.
More stable on Thursday
Is the weather calming down now? In the night to Thursday there will be a few showers and thunderstorms, which will subside in the second half of the night. Then it clears up in places, the lows are 15 to 18 degrees according to ZAMG.
From today’s perspective, Thursday will bring somewhat more stable summer weather with lots of sunshine in the lowlands. For the first time in days, ZAMG has not issued a thunderstorm warning. In the mountains and Mühlviertel, the chance of showers and thunderstorms is still greater in the afternoon, but is mostly limited to local events. At 27 to 31 degrees, it will be significantly warmer than before.
