Overall, however, there is still room for improvement: A survey of 1000 people commissioned by Austria Glas Recycling showed that 83 percent of the participants throw glass bottles in the residual waste.
Just over half said they did so for convenience. The problem for only 15 percent was the lack of a glass container close to where they lived. After all, one fifth of those surveyed stated that they regularly dispose of used glass properly. Almost three quarters were aware that ceramics and porcelain do not belong in glass containers. 53 percent wrongly believed that unemptied food containers should not go in the glass container. “Every packaging glass – from wine bottles to pesto jars – has to be disposed of in the glass container. Otherwise it is lost for recycling. Traces of food do not interfere with the recycling process,” says Harald Hauke, Managing Director of Austria Glas Recycling.
