The dissolution of Knesset (Parliament) was supposed to take place today, but the vote was postponed until tomorrow, two parliamentary sources told the AFP news agency, confirming reports in the Israeli press. The postponement was due to delays in other votes, they added.
The dissolution will put an end to Bennett’s brief government, which will be replaced by his foreign minister, Yair Lapid, until new elections are held in the autumn.

Why was Israel’s Parliament dissolved?
Bennett and Lapid marked a milestone in Israel’s history in June 2021 by achieving a coalition of eight parties (right, left, center), which included an Arab formation for the first time, with the main objective of ending twelve years uninterrupted power of the right-wing Benjamin Netanyahu.
But a year later, the coalition lost its majority in the chamber and Bennett announced last week his intention to dissolve it to call new elections.
Since then, rumors circulate in all directions. Netanyahu (Likud, right) tried in vain to attract coalition deputies to form a “alternative government” and retake the position of prime minister without going through elections.
A parliamentary committee on Tuesday morning finally authorized a bill to dissolve parliament on Wednesday, before postponing a decision until Thursday.
Yesterday, deputies intended to vote on a series of laws before dissolving the House to prevent the expiration of a law that protects the more than 475,000 Israeli settlers who live in occupied West Bank.

In early June, to further weaken the government coalition, the opposition refused to vote for the extension of this law, despite supporting its content.
This law must be approved no later than June 30, to prevent settlers from West Bank –Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967– are left without legal protection.
But if parliament dissolves before the expiration of that term, the legislation automatically remains in force.
The delays in today’s debates were attributed by the right to maneuvers by the arab deputies to prevent “the settlers’ law” from being renewed.
The coalition agreement included a change in power and a clause that establishes that stone he would be interim prime minister until the formation of a new government in the event of the dissolution of the Knesset.
“What we need now is to return to the concept of Israeli unity and not let the shadow forces divide us,” Lapid said last week.
This former star journalist will hold the post of prime minister and foreign minister at the same time, while mobilizing his forces for the elections.
In mid-July, he will receive US President Joe Biden in Israel on his first visit to the Middle East since his arrival at the White House.
