Israel will have elections in November, the fifth in four years

The 120-seat parliament was dissolved by 92 votes in favor and none against. Before the vote, Israeli deputies set November 1 as the date for the next legislative elections.

The decision put an end to the unprecedented experience of a heterogeneous coalition in power, made up of eight parties ranging from the right to the left and even an Arab party, which managed to put an end to the presence of Benjamin Netanyahu in Israeli politics. An experiment that lasted just over a year.

Hours before the dissolution of parliament – initially scheduled for Wednesday night and then postponed to Thursday due to delays in other votes – the outgoing prime minister and former Netanyahu associate, Naftali Bennetannounced that he will not be a candidate in the next elections.

On Friday, the other leader of the ruling coalition and the one who actually won the previous elections, Yair Lapid, will take over as interim prime minister since the coalition agreement included a clause that established that he would occupy the position in case of dissolution of the parliament

Israel, in a chronic political crisis

A year after signing this historic agreement, the coalition lost its majority in the chamber and Bennett announced last week his intention to dissolve it to call new elections in Israel.

On June 6, the opposition inflicted a setback on the executive, after rallying a majority against renewing a “settler law”a provision that the chamber has to approve every five years.

This law had to be renewed before June 30, otherwise the settlers of West BankPalestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967, were at risk of losing their legal protection under Israeli law.

Bennett, a fervent defender of these colonies, illegal under international law, could not run the risk of entering a chaotic situation and preferred to put an end to his government.

“What we need now is to return to the concept of Israeli unity and not let the shadow forces divide us,” Yair Lapid said last week. This former star journalist, in addition to directing the government, will occupy the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while mobilizing his forces for the elections.

In mid-July, he will receive the US president in Israel. Joe Biden on his first visit to the Middle East since arriving at the White House.

Internally, he must have his eyes and attention on the head of the opposition and the party LikudBenjamin Netanyahu, 72, and tried for corruption in a series of cases, and who fervently wants to return to power.

“The (coalition) experience has failed,” Netanyahu said Thursday. “That’s what happens when you mix a false extreme right with the radical left, all mixed with the muslim brothers“, he added.

“Will we have another Lapid government that will be a failure or a right-wing government led by us? We are the only alternative! A strong, nationalist and responsible government,” said Benjamin Netanyahu, thus launching his next electoral campaign ahead of time.
