UNTERWEISSENBACH. Setting a common sign for solidarity, cohesion and peace that is visible from afar is the idea behind the “Almleuchten” campaign, which has been tackled in the Mühlviertler Alm Freistadt region over the past few nights. Around the summer solstice, the “Jugendtankstelle Mühlviertler Alm” called for this public campaign. Together with young people, families, refugees from the Ukraine and social institutions in the Mühlviertler Alm region, oversized peace doves were created from a total of more than 3000 torches, which were visible from afar and lit up the night as a sign of peaceful coexistence and solidarity.

The locations were places that were easily visible from the town centers, such as the “Lus-Leit’n” of the Ahorner family in Weitersfelden. In the communities of Königswiesen, St. Georgen am Walde and Unterweißenbach, too, the young people used torches to form the international symbol for peace and understanding. In Schönau, the Catholic youth invited to Prandegg Castle, where the castle herb garden was ceremonially opened in the afternoon.

The striking date of the summer solstice symbolized the need for a change in human thinking and acting. For the initiators of the Almglühen one thing is certain: “We want to face the challenges of the times and put what connects before what separates. It is possible to overcome obstacles, approach each other, talk to each other and work on solutions for a future worth living for everyone.”

The organizational team around the youth gas station Mühlviertler Alm could count on numerous supporters and helpers when preparing their peace campaign, above all the initiative in Weitersfelden, the association “Königswiesen hilft Ukraine”, the deanery youth Grein, the Catholic youth Schönau and the youth from Unterweißenbach. In addition, this cross-community project would not have been possible without the financial support of the funding agency EUREGIO – Bavarian Forest – Bohemian Forest.
