José Antonio Ocampo, 69, was Minister of Agriculture, Finance and Director of National Planning during the presidency of Ernest Samperwhile in the international field he served as executive director of the ECLAC (1998-2003), as well as Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (2003-2007).
The next finance minister is considered one of Colombia’s foremost economists and has served as a professor at Columbia University. He is co-author of books with the Nobel Joseph Stiglitz.
The new government of Colombia takes shape
Graduated as an economist and psychologist from the University of Notre Dame, in the United States, he obtained a doctorate in economics and political science from Yale University.
This is the second appointment of Gustavo Petro, after the weekend he announced to Alvaro Leyvaas his foreign minister.
Petro, a 62-year-old economist who became the first leftist to be elected president of Colombia, will take office on August 7, replacing the rightist Ivan Duke.
During the campaign, the elected president promised ambitious social and economic programs to combat poverty, inequality and exclusion in Colombia, a country of 50 million inhabitants, arousing fear in the markets and in investors.
