In Carinthia, too, the clean-up work continued yesterday after the severe storms on Wednesday night. A total of 650 emergency services slowly worked their way through the particularly badly devastated areas in the greater Villach area.
The army was busy building a temporary road from a neighboring community to Arriach for the emergency services. There it had rained 118 liters per square meter in just one hour. However, according to Mayor Gerald Ebner (FP), civilians and onlookers obstructed the work by blocking the road. Furthermore, the community could only be reached by helicopter.
Work is also underway on a road link for the civilian population, but it will probably take a few days to complete. The civil defense alarm was still in place there, and residents were asked not to leave their homes.
In the evening hours yesterday, the power supply was largely restored, but 350 households were still without electricity. According to Mayor Ebner, the damage assessment has been completed and all enclosed houses are now to be developed. Many people are accommodated in accommodation facilities or with neighbors.
In the neighboring town of Treffen, which is also in the Gegental, there was a discussion yesterday evening about partially lifting the civil defense alarm. There, an 82-year-old was hit by a debris flow and killed.
The water supply could be restored in meetings, but the water has to be boiled because of possible bacterial contamination. Access for the emergency services is now possible.
Meanwhile, various donation and support campaigns were also launched. For example, the Chamber of Labor offers members interest-free loans, and the municipality of Arriach itself has started a fundraising campaign on its website.
The country’s pots are already available to victims. In addition, replacement apartments are being sought for those who lost their homes during the night of the storm.
