EU roaming: faster internet abroad

If you want to use streaming services in the usual quality and without stuttering on a beach holiday in Italy, you can do so now: the new EU roaming regulation comes into force today. This prohibits providers from throttling the speed of data transmission abroad, as has often been the case in the past. “We managed to achieve significant improvements with ‘Roam like at Home’,” says Angelika Winzig, head of the ÖVP delegation in the European Parliament and chief negotiator of the European Parliament for the roaming regulation.

Just in time for the start of the main holiday season, it should now also be possible to reliably use data-intensive services such as streaming films or video telephony abroad.

Since 2017, consumers in other EU countries as well as in Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway have been able to make calls, send text messages and use mobile data free of charge. This regulation would now have expired, which is why the new, improved regulation was drawn up. It will apply until 2032. The prices that network operators charge each other for roaming continue to fall significantly. However, regulations still prevent permanent phone calls and surfing abroad.
