Bolsonaro gets a crucial social aid package ahead of the elections

The Constitutional Amendment Proposal 1/2022 (PEC 1/2022) raises the Brazil Aid from 400 to 600 reais (80 to 120 dollars), creates a bonus of 1,000 reais (200 dollars) so that truck drivers can face the increase in diesel, and increases the amount of the vale-gas among other measures that will mean a state expenditure of 41.25 billion reais (8,100 million dollars).

Auxilio Brasil was launched by Bolsonaro to replace the former President’s old Bolsa Familia Lula da Silva.

The approval of PEC 1/2022 constitutes a clear victory for President Bolsonaro and had the support even from the opposition.

The electoral legislation prohibits the increase of expenses of this type in year of elections, except in cases of “national emergency”.

For this reason, a state of emergency was declared before this PEC was put to the vote with a “package of benefits” that must now be analyzed by the Chamber of Deputieswhere the government has its own majority.

Senator José Serra, of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB, center) was the only one who voted against the government bill.

The road to re-election turned uphill for Bolsonaro, who has been falling in the polls of voting intentions, as a consequence of the increase in the cost of living in Brazil. His rival, Lula da Silva, would win in the first round, on October 2, according to the latest measurements.
