Online booking is foreseen for all tourists who come to the city from outside the Veneto region but do not want to stay overnight. Depending on the day on which Venice is visited, between three and ten euros have to be paid. If you book far in advance, you should pay less. However, the city administration will not set a daily tourist limit.
The presence of tourists should also be checked using mobile phones. The aim of the municipality is to regulate the tourist rush. On certain days, over 100,000 tourists flock to the lagoon city. The booking system is to be tested in the next few weeks.
Almost ten euros for a ride on the water bus
The price of the tickets for a trip on board a vaporetto, the water bus in the lagoon city, is to rise from 7.5 to 9.5 euros for tourists, the Venetian daily newspaper “Il Gazzettino” reported. The local public transport company ACTV wants to use this to compensate for the loss of income during the pandemic years. The company still had revenues of 151 million euros in 2019, but only 65 million euros in 2020 and 85 million euros in 2021.
According to Mayor Luigi Brugnaro, the money will primarily go into the maintenance and cleaning of the historic city. Venice has been fighting the tourist rush for years and has tried different strategies to keep the crowds in check.
