Eaten poisonous mushrooms: two Styrians in mortal danger

Lunch ended for two Styrians in the hospital on Friday: the couple from Kindberg (Bruck-Mürzzuschlag) had probably eaten panther mushrooms, the police said in the evening. The mushroom with a brown cap and many small, white spots resembles the edible pearl mushroom. However, it contains high doses of ibotenic acid and muscimol and is therefore considered highly toxic.

A neighbor alerted emergency services after the 57-year-old wife passed out. After paramedics arrived, her 60-year-old husband also lost consciousness. Because of the narrow staircase, the volunteer fire brigade had to come to the rescue. The couple were taken out of the apartment using a turntable ladder.

After the first aid by the emergency doctor, the woman was taken by helicopter to the LKH in Graz, the man to the LKH Leoben. Both people are in mortal danger, police said. Parts of the consumed mushrooms were confiscated. There is no evidence of third-party negligence.
