Since the source of the fire in the middle of the reed belt could only be reached from the air, two police helicopters with an external extinguishing water tank took over the firefighting.
The emergency services managed to get the fire under control by the afternoon, said Rainer Schmit from the Eisenstadt-Umwelt district fire brigade command. According to Schmit, strong winds and the poor accessibility of the fire site demanded a lot from the emergency services.
A Black Hawk from the army has now replaced the police helicopters in fighting the fire. This has a much larger capacity and is intended to ensure that the last embers in the reed belt are extinguished.
In addition to the helicopters, nine fire brigades with around 100 members were deployed across the federal states. The Lower Austrian fire brigade provided a mobile gas station and a team from Wiener Neustadt for the helicopters.
