Police chief resigns after Texas school shooting

“I believe this is the best decision for Uvalde,” a local newspaper quoted the man as saying. The focus must now be on enlightenment. The broadcaster ABC reported on Saturday that the resignation letter had been received by the city. The chief of police had previously been on leave. An 18-year-old gunman shot dead 19 children and two teachers at an elementary school in the small town of Uvalde at the end of May. The attacker shot the children and teachers in two connected classrooms with an assault rifle. Only about 75 minutes after the shooter opened fire, emergency services penetrated into the room and killed the perpetrator. The police were heavily criticized for their hesitant intervention.

Most recently, there had been loud criticism from the victims’ parents. They complain that the clarification is progressing only hesitantly and that important questions are not being answered. After the massacre, the authorities made contradictory statements about the incidents surrounding the police operation and corrected earlier statements several times.
