Before that, there had been a violent crash. China’s Zhou Guanyu overturned in his Alfa Romeo and was thrown at high speed over a tire stack into a fence.
The 23-year-old was taken to the clinic along the route for initial examinations. Soon after, the Alfa Romeo team management gave the all-clear: Zhou was therefore conscious, responsive and did not suffer any serious external injuries or fractures.
Also affected were George Russell in the Mercedes and – due to another collision – Alexander Albon in the Williams. Both parked their damaged cars on the side of the track, Albon was examined in another hospital. According to Russell, he could have continued, but the regulations do not allow this. Alpine pilot Esteban Ocon and Yuki Tsunoda in the AlphaTauri were able to drive their racing cars back to the pits.
The race was interrupted for 50 minutes. The standing restart for the still drivable cars took place according to the original starting grid after qualifying. The respective backers took the place of the eliminated Zhou, Russell and Albon.
