15 scientists and a moderation team accompanied the process. The results will be handed over to the federal government in the afternoon.
The Climate Council agreed on more than 90 recommendations for a climate-healthy Austria. He discussed and negotiated the fields of action mobility, energy, nutrition and land use, consumption and production as well as living in small groups until the teams were largely in agreement. The proposals then went to the plenary session until there was broad agreement there too.
Report: A hot iron is missing
On Monday morning, selected citizens presented the results of their work in a press conference. This includes, among other things, the anchoring of a fundamental right to climate protection, a ban on soil sealing, the abolition of subsidies for fossil fuels, the creation of a non-partisan climate commission, greenhouse gas tariffs for food from third countries, higher taxes for climate-damaging vehicles and much more. One hot topic, the 100 km/h speed limit, did not make it into the report.
The Scientific Advisory Board supports the demands: “The depth, breadth and care of the discussion process and the decision-making legitimizes the result of the climate council,” says its statement. The citizens had shown science that the population would go much further than assumed when it came to climate protection, summed up coordinator Georg Kaser. However, Georg Tappeiner from the moderation team noted: “Such a climate council cannot replace political institutions.”
In the afternoon, the climate council presented the recommendations to climate protection minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) and economics minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP). Gewessler had announced in advance that he would carefully examine all recommendations and implement some of them. “But I cannot promise that we will be able to implement all of them,” said the minister.
The environmental protection organization GLOBAL 2000 welcomed the results of the climate council and at the same time called on politicians to take action.
