1,500 Ukrainians are already working in Upper Austria

“They take advantage of opportunities,” says Iris Schmidt, the deputy state manager of the AMS labor market service. Yesterday they took stock together with Social and Integration Councilor Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (ÖVP). According to this, 35 percent of people displaced from Ukraine between the ages of 18 and 64 are already working. That’s around 1500 people. “This puts Upper Austria well above the national average of 22 percent,” emphasizes Hattmannsdorfer.

Lots of highly qualified people

Even if entry is often due to a lack of German language skills or due to outstanding recognition of degrees in unskilled occupations, the way to the top is open. Doctors, for example, can work as assistants under specialist supervision and grow in the industry. According to Hattmannsdorfer, efforts are being made to ensure that the recognition process is carried out more quickly, as is the case with EU citizens. The Chamber of Commerce has already informed 1400 people at “Welcome Breakfasts” in 14 branch offices. The state of Upper Austria provides free German courses via Wifi.
