EasyJet COO Peter Belew has resigned from his post to look for “other business opportunities,” according to what was announced this Monday, in the midst of cancellations and labor disputes at the airline.
Following Bellew’s departure, the company appointed David Morgan, an employee of the company since 2016, as interim chief operating officer.
Budget airline chief executive Johan Lundgren, in a statement, thanked Bellew for his “hard work” and wished him “all the best” for the future.
“Everyone at easyJet remains fully focused on delivering a safe and secure operation this summer,” Lundgren said as the airline faces increasing pressure to cut current flight schedule changes.
The aviation sector is struggling to manage the growing demand for air travel, while at the same time suffering from a shortage of staff and difficulty obtaining security clearances needed to hire new employees.
This summer, easyJet was forced to cancel thousands of flights due to a shortage of workers.
Last week, last-minute flight cancellations were announced in the United Kingdom, mostly at Gatwick Airport, outraging passengers.
In June, British trade union United lamented the airline’s “lack of leadership” and said Bellew needed to “get things under control”.
“easyJet remains fully focused on our day to day operations and continues to monitor the situation closely, taking precautions to be more resilient over the summer due to the current operating situation,” the airline said, adding that it continues to operate. up to 1,700 flights per day, carrying 250,000 passengers.
