The price of natural gas rose to the highest level since the first weeks of the invasion of Ukraine

The base price for natural gas in Europe this Monday topped 159 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), the highest since March 9, due to concerns over the cessation of supplies from Russia via the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline.

According to Bloomberg data seen by Efe, at 11:00 am in Lisbon, the price of TTF (Title Transfer Facility) natural gas for August delivery on the Dutch market rose this Monday to 159.50 euros per MWh, up 8. 5% more than on Friday. the highest value since March 9th.

The increase comes after Russian state gas company Gazprom confirmed last Friday that the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline will be out of service for 11 days, from the 11th to the 21st of this month, due to repairs.

The day before, German Minister of Economy and Energy Robert Habek announced the technical closure of the infrastructure and expressed concern about the possibility of a complete “blockage” of the gas pipeline under the guise of repair work.

Since last Wednesday, on the eve of the German minister’s statements, gas prices have increased by 15.5%.

The increase is in addition to what has happened since mid-June, when the price once again exceeded the €100 mark due to a reduction in Nord Stream 1 flow caused by a lack of material as a result of sanctions imposed on Russia. as the state company Gazprom justified it in its time.

Since then, gas prices have risen by 64%.

At the same time last year, natural gas cost 35 euros per MWh, which is 78% less than now.
