Forty percent of Austrians drink alcohol once a week or more, as the online research institute Marktagent found out in a study. Peer pressure or the prospect of a fun party evening are often reasons why one or the other glass is consumed too much.
There are many good reasons for not drinking alcohol: The most common reason for avoiding alcohol is for one’s own health, but its characteristic taste doesn’t seem to go down well with everyone in the population either. However, alcohol-free alternatives are increasingly being preferred to alcohol-based counterparts – and not only if you have to drive afterwards.
Alternatives can compete with “real” sparkling water
Alcohol-free beer and so-called “mocktails” (a combination of cocktail and the English “to mock”, which means something like “imitate”) are by far the most commonly drunk in this country. According to the current study by Marktagent, these are seen as particularly “positive”, “innovative” and “creative”.
Alcohol-free alternatives to wine, sparkling wine and, more recently, spirits are also becoming increasingly popular. Alcohol-free spirits try to imitate the taste of normally high-proof drinks such as whiskey, gin, vodka or rum. As with the originals, manufacturers often rely on artificial flavors, colorings and flavor enhancers – so a look at the list of ingredients doesn’t hurt here either.
There are already numerous ideas for anti-alcoholic toasts on social media, true to the motto “zero percent alcohol, one hundred percent taste”:
