Correa confirmed the versions of changes in Guillermo Lasso’s team and although he said that they “go beyond” the indigenous protests that paralyzed Ecuador for 18 days, the decisions seem to be the result of those weeks of tension in the streets.
At the end of Monday, the Minister of Health, Ximena Garzonresigned in a letter in which he thanked President Guillermo Lasso “profoundly for the opportunity he gave me to serve the country and I am proud to have contributed with you to the control of the Covid-19 pandemic.”
Guillermo Lasso assumes the impact of the protests
Correa explained that the changes in the cabinet are “necessary” to move forward and execute “many things that have been left in the pipeline” in Ecuador.
The official stressed that the National Assembly has rejected the impeachment project of Guillermo Lasso, which means that the majority of the population does not want to change a “democratically elected” government, but he did warn that “citizens expect many things from him.”
Correa left open the chance for Lasso to choose leaders from other parties for some positions, and gave as an example the fact that Maria Sara Jijondirector of the National Public Procurement Service, was the running mate of the leader of the Democratic Left, Xavier Hervas.
