The lawmaker wants students banned from the Citizenship program to be under guard at the school “during the school term.”

The Ministry of State (MP) wants two students from Vila Nova de Famalicão, who were banned by their parents from the subject of Citizenship and Development, to be placed under the care of the school “during the study period”.

In allegations about the promotion and protection process for two students that Lusa had access to this Monday, Famalican MP at the Family and Juvenile Court says it is the only measure “that is in the best interests of young people.”

These are two students, brothers, who attend the Camilo Castelo Branco school group in Famalicana, Braga district, and whose parents have banned them from the 2018/2019 academic year from attending the subject “Citizenship and Development”.

Parents state that citizenship education is within their purview and emphasize that they are “particularly concerned and rejected” by the Education for Gender Equality and Education for Health and Sexuality modules, which are part of the subject.

They also say that the rest of the modules of the discipline are “a waste of time.”

For the past four years, honors students have been considered “losers” for failing in this subject, but by decision of the Ministry of Education, they are conditionally removed from the course, pending the outcome of a court case on the matter.

However, the case was also referred to the Family and Juvenile Court.

In the accusations, the MP believes that parents “endanger” the formation, education and development of their children, adding that there is a danger that young people will be subjected to “mental abuse”, “not receive proper care or love for their age” and “be subjected to parental behavior that seriously affects their emotional balance.”

In addition, the deputy adds, there is a danger of retention and, as a result, difficulties in accessing higher education when it comes to “excellent students with an impeccable academic career.”

He says education on issues such as human rights, gender equality, health, sexuality, safety, defense, peace and animal welfare, among others, is also under threat.

The deputy believes that the attitude of parents can configure “emotional coercion”, as well as give “an example of criminals who decide not to obey, deciding on their own case, as if they were judges.”

“They act as agents of crime,” he adds.

He also warns that the students in question could be victims of “bullying” from the rest of the law-respecting school community, “which is already happening on social media.”

“Parents seem to be ignorant that a child or young person is an autonomous being with legal autonomy,” the deputy also said in the allegations.

For all these reasons, the public ministry wants students to be under the care of the school only during the school period.

“To the extent that it becomes effective to overcome the impasse of danger, past, present and future, it will be the trust of the right person, in specific circumstances, the trust of young people in the most suitable subject for the specific danger: the school itself. The placement of young people, only for the school period, under the care of the school itself,” the deputy says.

It clarifies that the school, represented by the director of the Agrupamento de Escolas Camilo Castelo Branco, Carlos Teixeira and / or the first-line interlocutor, psychologist Marta Silva, “will be people whose suitability is beyond doubt, even for the functions assigned to them.

According to the deputy, the measure of support with parents does not seem appropriate, since the dangers were created by the parents themselves.

Similarly, the deputy says that a measure of family support is not possible “because no family member was willing to mediate in a solution, perhaps because they knew the stubborn nature” of the students’ father.

The students’ father, Artur Mesquita Guimarães, was contacted by Lusa and said that a court hearing was scheduled for Tuesday at Famalicao Family and Juvenile Court.

“Of course, we do not agree with these statements and tomorrow [terça-feira] we will talk about our justice,” he added.

The students are 14 and 16 years old and will attend 9th and 11th grades respectively in 2022/2023.
