The decision was celebrated by Father Joshtrom Kureethadam, coordinator of the Ecology Sector in the Dicastery (Ministry) for the Service of Integral Human Development (Vatican), which assists Pope Francis’ work on the environment, explained the decision.
“In 2020, the Vatican called on Catholic institutions to divest from fossil fuel companies given their damage to the environment; I applaud these prophetic institutions divesting today and I encourage all institutions in the world to reduce our dependence on these harmful energy sources by divesting from fossil fuels”he remarked.
“This is how prophetic institutions can live out our values and help the most vulnerable among us; if we want to achieve peace and ensure a liveable planet for all, including future generations, we have to end our dependence on the fossil fuels that power the current climate crisis,” he added.
The divestment is a continuation of the statement issued a few days ago by the African bishops gathered at SECAM (Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar) in which they ask governments to take urgent and ambitious measures to protect biodiversity.
One of the main demands of that document is the immediate stoppage of the construction of the East African Oil Pipeline (EACOP), planned in Uganda and Tanzania, whose construction will displace more than 12,000 families.
