The University of Aveiro (UA) suspended a university professor this morning for allegedly making homophobic comments on his Facebook page.
In an interview with Luza, UA rector Paulo Jorge Ferreira explained that the suspension was determined this morning following a disciplinary process launched on Friday against physics professor Paulo López.
“All the necessary elements for the process were collected and the process was launched last Friday. The teacher has also been suspended as part of this process so that the necessary steps can now be taken with the necessary calmness,” Ding said.
Paulo Jorge Ferreira spoke to reporters before the arrival of the priest, when at the same time there was a demonstration against hate speech and discrimination in UA, which was attended by about 200 university students who chanted: “Our fight is going on all day, against racism, machismo and homophobia and “note that homophobia is not an opinion.”
According to Paulo Jorge Ferreira, this decision was justified “by the nature of the statements and how they affected the necessary atmosphere of trust that must exist between a professor and his students, the apparent conflict between university values and the lack of values that these statements imply, and the impact on image and values of the University”.
The rector also said he acted “as quickly as possible to act within the law and available procedures”, ensuring that the AU “categorically rejects any hate speech, any call for violence for any reason whatsoever”.

Dissatisfied with this situation, several students created a group on the social network Facebook called “Action against Professor Paulo López”, which already has more than 700 members.
In an email sent to Luza, Professor Paulo López said the controversy was “artificial”, stating that it was due to a “violent backlash” from the target group.
“The so-called “students” reacted as citizens, not as students, since my actions did not take place in my workplace, which should be aside and not even within the framework of my work,” said the teacher, believing that the priest “neither what should not be said.”
Paulo López also insisted that the publication he made was made in his personal capacity and reflects his personal opinion, which “is sovereign in a state that is considered free and enshrined in the Constitution.”
“Of course, there will be those who will not like my position, but this is part of life. I don’t like many positions either, and I don’t fuss and don’t chase anyone, I just comment, as in my publication,” he concluded.
