Many are familiar with the uneasy feeling in the car: the circulatory system causes problems, the hands start to sweat, the head is pounding and nausea slowly rises. Children often get it too when it comes to motion sickness. Experts on behalf of the rental car company Sunny-Cars have compiled what can help against this in good time before the start of the holiday season.
Good preparation is half the battle: If you fear before you start your journey that your body will react in an irritated manner to the contradictory signals while driving, you can start your holiday well prepared. First of all, no alcoholic beverages or caffeine should end up in the stomach. Eating light meals helps minimize the risk of motion sickness. Instead of cocktails, burgers & Co., it is advisable to drink herbal tea, because fennel, aniseed, caraway or chamomile tea release active ingredients that counteract the feeling of discomfort – even acutely when the nausea is already there. The same goes for ginger. If you want to prevent motion sickness symptoms, don’t drink too little of it and take your favorite herbal or ginger tea with you in the car.
Another tip in advance: A natural therapy against motion sickness focuses entirely on the ginger root. Ideally, fresh ginger is chewed up a few days before the car trip or drunk in tea, which is allowed to steep for at least six minutes. Two grams a day is a good measure. The dosage can also be achieved with special ginger capsules from the pharmacy.
In order to stabilize the body and especially the head while driving, a supporting padding such as a neck pillow should be on board. This also provides optimal support for children’s heads when they fall asleep. It is also an advantage if the focus is not on worrying about possible travel sickness, but on an entertainment program – from your favorite playlist to the audio book.
Chewing movements also counteract the nausea. So enough low-fat snacks such as carrots or apples can be eaten. If possible, your gaze should be directed to a fixed point on the horizon. At the latest when the snacks are over, a stop is announced to get some fresh air – preferably where there are no intense smells of petrol and the like.
Top tip when traveling: anti-motion sickness professionals know the perfect massage technique to help themselves naturally. The so-called Nei Kuan point works specifically against motion sickness. Located an inch below the wrist, centered on the inside of the forearm, it should be pressed on each arm for a minute or more.
