Medicine entrance test: this year 16,000 registrations for 1,850 places

Almost 16,000 people registered for the entrance test for medical studies on Friday (July 8th) this year. There are 1,850 study places available at the medical universities of Vienna, Innsbruck and Graz and at the University of Linz this year, 110 more than in the previous year. Unlike in 2021, 3G proof is no longer required for participation, but apart from your own seat, an FFP2 mask is still mandatory.

70 additional places in Linz

The chances of getting a place at university are slightly better this year than in the past two years. In the previous year, there were significantly more applicants with 18,000 registrations, plus the additional study places. 70 of them are in Linz, 20 in Vienna and ten each in Graz and Innsbruck. A total of 760 places are offered for medicine and dentistry at the Medical University of Vienna, 410 at the Medical University of Innsbruck, 370 at the Medical University of Graz and 310 in Linz.

This time, 7,881 people have registered at the Medical University of Vienna, which means more than ten people are interested in a place on the course. There were 3,350 applications at the Medical University of Innsbruck (around eight applications per place), at the Medical University of Graz 2,650 (around seven applications per place) and at the University of Linz 1,907 (around six applications per place). As a rule, around 80 percent of those registered actually appear for the test on the day of the test.

Eight-hour entrance test

The admissions process lasts around eight hours (including a lunch break): what is tested is previous school knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics, reading skills and text comprehension, as well as cognitive skills (number sequence, memory and retention, assembling figures, verbal fluency, recognizing implications). In the “Social-Emotional Skills” part of the test, the applicants have to use the description of a situation to determine how the other person feels or rank upcoming decisions in terms of their importance. Aspiring dentists must demonstrate manual skills instead of understanding texts and recognizing implications.

The high school diploma is not a prerequisite for taking the test – the high school diploma must first be presented as part of the admission process. In human medicine, at least 95 percent of the places at all universities go to candidates from the EU and at least 75 percent to applicants with an Austrian Matura certificate. In dentistry, places are awarded to the applicants with the best test result, regardless of nationality.

Innovation hardly used

For the first time it was possible to reserve a certain number of medical study places for tasks in the public interest. Despite the call from many quarters for more panel doctors in the country, the model was hardly used, only the army secured ten study places at the Medical University of Vienna. The candidates have to take the normal admission test, but not, as usual, be among the top 680 applicants for human medicine. Instead, 75 percent of the number of points from all applicants is sufficient.
