“The intelligence service of the Revolutionary Guards identified and detained diplomats from foreign embassies who were spying in Iran,” the official Fars agency and the state-run TYV said.
Although an initial information from Fars indicated that a British diplomat had been expelled from the country, state television said that he was only removed from “the area” where the arrests took place after having “carried out intelligence operations” in “areas where military maneuvers were being carried out.
The British Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for its part, denied the arrest of a diplomat from its country in Iran and described as “false” the information in the Iranian press.
“Reports about the detention of a British diplomat in Iran are completely false,” said a spokesman for the Foreign Office in London.
Espionage
A video shows images of a man, presented as Giles Whittaker, talking in a room that appears to be a school classroom.
According to the television journalist, the diplomat “is part of the group of people who traveled to the Shahdad desert with his family as a tourist.”
“As the pictures show, this person I took photos in a prohibited area, where a exercise military”, picked up television, according to the AFP agency.
After an apology, the diplomat “was expelled from the area”, according to television, although for the fars agency, the Briton “was expelled from the country after making his apologies.”
nuclear deal
The news comes amid tensions between Iran and world powers, which are trying to revive the nuclear deal of 2015, of which USA it was unilaterally withdrawn in 2018.
7 years ago, by that understanding, Tehran drastically limited its uranium enrichment in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
But in 2018, the then president donald trump unilaterally withdrew the United States from the agreement, raising tensions across the Middle East and sparking a series of attacks and incidents.
A week ago the talks in Qatar between the parties ended without significant progress.
