“Contamination with coli and enterococci bacteria was found in an elevated tank, but to be on the safe side, the warning currently applies to the entire municipal area,” says Mayor Franz Scheiböck (SP). Samples were also taken from the other four reservoirs on Wednesday. First results are expected for today.
It is not yet possible to say how the faecal germs got into the drinking water, says Eva Rechberger from the drinking water supervisory authority in the state of Upper Austria. One guess is that the microbiological contamination was caused by the heavy and repeated rains. According to Rechberger, other communities in the district are currently not affected.
It can take a few days before the exact cause is found and the drinking water is safe to drink again. Water that is to be drunk should therefore be boiled for at least three minutes beforehand and then slowly cooled for at least ten minutes. Tap water can be used for showering and washing clothes.
