The northern Italian region of Liguria has applied to the government in Rome for a state of emergency due to the drought. The decision was taken after rainfall fell by 40 percent compared to the average of previous years, Ligurian President Giovanni Toti reported on Thursday. The state of emergency allows affected companies to be compensated and investments made to improve waterways, Toti said.

Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s government had already declared a state of emergency in five northern Italian regions on Monday. 35 million euros were made available to the regions of Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Emilia Romagna. Northern Italy in particular is currently experiencing severe drought. Due to the ongoing water shortage, the state of emergency could soon also be applied for in the central Italian regions of Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio.
As a result of the climate crisis, droughts are becoming more frequent and worse. This is now the scientific consensus.
