“The important thing is to inform that this does exist, who is going to decide if there is a crime is the judge, and in the first instance the Public Ministry, it is the procedure that we are doing,” said the president.
López Obrador made the announcement in the framework of the presentation of a report by the head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) of MexicoPablo Gómez Álvarez, who said that the investigation had been opened after filing a complaint for possible operations with resources from illicit origin
“A scheme was detected in which a former president of the Republic obtained economic benefits, in this scheme, the former president, through international transfers, received 26 million pesos,” explained Gómez Álvarez, referring to Enrique Peña Nieto, who ruled Mexico between 2012 and 2018.
The suspicious transfers of Peña Nieto
According to the first investigations, Peña Nieto, who is being investigated for a possible scheme of money launderingwould have benefited financially from family businesses, he added.
The wire transfers were made at three times: one for nearly $773,000 on August 21, 2019, plus two for more than $241,500 on October 20 and October 29, 2021.
In addition, according to Gómez Álvarez, the former president’s family withdrew a total of 9.1 million dollars and deposits of 2.2 million dollars between 2013 and 2022, money of which the source is unknown.
According to López Obrador, the head of the FIU gave the instruction that all information related to “politically exposed persons” be handed over to the Prosecutor’s Office, headed by Alejandro Gertz Manero.
He also emphasized that in the investigations into former presidents there will be no “spectacular acts”, as occurred in previous administrations in Mexico.
“We seriously care about ending corruption, not the circus, we want there to be no corruption or impunity for anyone, that the Prosecutor’s Office decides autonomously,” he said.
