Josef H. was a founding member of the Braunau Simbach Yacht Club. With his sailing boat, which went down in a storm in the Adriatic off Izola, he spent many years training young sailors to become ocean skippers, dismayed club members say. The 74-year-old was a highly esteemed and popular teacher at the HTL Braunau until he retired.
He was at home in Burgkirchen, but was also very well known and popular in the neighboring community of Neukirchen an der Enknach. His wife is still in Portoroz and is being looked after by other sailors, it was said.
“The Austrian Embassy in Ljubljana is in contact with both the relatives and the local authorities and will support the family,” said a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when asked by OÖN.
