Shinzo Abe’s visit to Argentina for the G20 summit

During his stay in the country, Shinzo Abe, who then held the position of one of the world’s leading economies, defended the importance of strengthening a “free and fair foreign trade system”, one of the guidelines of his last government.

The G20 summit in Argentina was focused on trade tensions between USA Y Chinaa sensitive issue for Japan due to its trade links with the former and the regional tensions that Tokyo is experiencing with Beijing.

In the bilateral field, the G20 summit ended up establishing a good understanding between Abe and then-president Mauricio Macri, which resulted in trade agreements for the export of meat and fruit from Patagonia to Japan and in the decision to raise the relationship to strategic partner.

Japan received the mandate from Argentina for the presidency of the following summit, in October 2019 in the city of Osaka.
