Mortal remains were found, Italian media reported. The rescue teams have been looking for the missing person’s body under ice and rubble since early morning.
Four of the ten fatalities so far have not yet been identified. Seven of the eight injured are still in the hospital. The health authorities said the condition of two German wounded people who are in the hospital in the city of Belluno is satisfactory.
A day of mourning is planned for the entire Trentino Val di Fassa on Saturday. The Archbishop of Trento, Lauro Tisi, will celebrate a mourning ceremony in honor of the victims with the parish priest of Canazei, Mario Bravin, member of the Alpine Rescue Service. The headquarters of the rescue units are located in Canazei.
Meanwhile, access to the top of the Marmolada remained closed. The highest mountain in the Dolomites, located in the provinces of Trento and Belluno, will no longer be accessible for several weeks, according to experts. Trentino tourism is worried about the summer season, which has regained momentum after two and a half years of the pandemic.
On Friday there was a rockfall not far from the accident site on the Marmolada, but according to the first findings no one was injured, as the mountain rescue service in the northern Italian region of Veneto announced according to the dpa. The boulder broke loose on Friday at 11:38 a.m. at about 2,400 meters above sea level from the Moiazza mountain and fell off an access path for a via ferrata. A German alpinist heard a loud thunder, saw a cloud of dust and reportedly sounded the alarm in a nearby shelter. After overflights with the helicopter, the mountain rescue service ruled out that people were affected. The Moiazza mountain near the municipality of Agordo in the province of Belluno is just under 20 kilometers as the crow flies or three quarters of an hour’s drive from the Marmolada.
