The course was set for two important Upper Austrian infrastructure projects.
The project for the construction of a new Danube bridge near Mauthausen was submitted by the federal states of Upper and Lower Austria for an environmental impact assessment (EIA), as announced by Transport Councilor Günther Steinkellner (FP) and his Lower Austrian counterpart Ludwig Schleritzko (VP).
The bridge is to connect the B3 in Upper Austria with the B123 in Lower Austria 700 meters downstream of the existing bridge. The route leads to the Pyburg junction in Lower Austria, where it joins the existing bypass.
The planned four-lane expansion of the Pyburg-Windpassing bypass is currently not planned, as this is not necessary due to the expected volume of traffic. In this way, the objections of the municipality of Ennsdorf and the citizens’ initiative would be taken into account. “With the new construction of a Danube bridge near Mauthausen, we want to improve the traffic situation for business and commuters,” says Schleritzko. Steinkellner also agrees and adds: “The new construction of the bridge is urgently needed in order to be able to efficiently direct the traffic volume in the Enns-Donau-Winkel region.” The planned start of construction is in 2024.
The projected costs for the project have risen to around 168 million euros due to the higher construction costs. The cost sharing is already fixed with 55 percent Upper Austria and 45 percent Lower Austria. After completion of the new bridge, the existing crossing of the Danube is to be extensively renovated.

In Weyer in the Steyr-Land district yesterday, after decades of waiting – discussions have been going on since 1949 – the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the around 50 million euro local bypass took place. This is intended to relieve the market center along the B121 of traffic with two tunnels. The larger tunnel to the east will be 612 meters long and the smaller one 65 meters. The first vehicles are scheduled to roll on July 4, 2025. Mayor Gerhard Klaffer (SP): “Now it is important to revitalize the district that has been calmed by traffic.”
The Weyer bypass is part of the Upper Austria plan for mobility infrastructure. “As a state, we rely on a well-developed infrastructure, especially in rural areas,” said Governor Thomas Stelzer (VP).
