Holidays, increasing numbers: interest in vaccination is increasing

Long queues in front of the corona vaccination routes are currently a reality in many places. The numbers also show the increased interest in vaccination: In the week before last, around 3,220 stitches were taken nationwide from Monday to Thursday, this week there were almost twice as many with 5,964, it said yesterday on request from the crisis team of the state of Upper Austria.

Protection for vacation

On the one hand, this has to do with the number of infections increasing again: Compared to the previous day, 1694 new Covid cases were registered yesterday. In addition, many compatriots also want to protect themselves accordingly before their (abroad) vacation. Therefore, the current 19 vaccination locations are now to be increased: From next week there will be an additional opening day per location. The situation is being analyzed in detail in order to be able to react if necessary, said LH deputy and health officer Christine Haberlander (VP) yesterday. In order to avoid waiting times, it is strongly recommended to make a vaccination appointment at www.corona.ooe.gv.at.

The 4th stitch is currently recommended for vulnerable groups and people over the age of 65 in general. For healthy people over the age of twelve, however, there is currently no explicit recommendation for a booster vaccination. At “personal request” you can have the 4th vaccination given in coordination with the vaccination doctor.

Currently, more than 15,000 people in Upper Austria have gotten their fourth dose. Organizations for the elderly and nursing homes were informed in writing about the offers for booster vaccinations, and 113,000 reminder emails were also sent out. To those who had previously booked a vaccination appointment with the country. “And only seven unsubscribed from the Corona newsletter as a result,” vaccination coordinator Gerhard Durstberger interpreted as a sign of popular support.

For the booster shots, Pfizer (98 percent) and Moderna doses are administered. Waiting for a vaccine adapted to the omicron variant makes no sense, said Bernd Lamprecht, head of the Institute for Pulmonary Medicine at the Kepler University Hospital. “We don’t know when in the fall and how many doses of the adapted vaccine will come.”

Although the new vaccine increases protection against an omicron infection, it prevents a severe course just as well as the current vaccines. “We also don’t recommend waiting, because in autumn we don’t even know which omicron variant will predominate and whether the adapted vaccines will then also work on them,” he says.
