The Dutchman won the sprint at his team’s home track on Saturday, 1.675 seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc, whose Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz was third. Verstappen received eight World Championship points for this and will also start from first place on Sunday in Spielberg. His championship lead over stable rival Sergio Perez, who finished fifth, grew to 37 points.
Verstappen started from pole position in front of Leclerc and Sainz, there were no pit stops in the 23 laps. George Russell finished fourth in the Mercedes, the Mexican Perez had to work his way up from 13th on the grid after an offense that was subsequently punished in qualifying. Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton in the second Mercedes did not get past eighth place.
For Verstappen, Spielberg was already the third victory in a sprint race after Silverstone 2021 and Imola 2022. The result of the sprint determines the starting grid of the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday (3 p.m. / live ServusTV, ORF 1 and Sky).
