Pensioners fell 80 meters while hiking

The 74-year-old hiker went on a tour to the Gassel cave in Ebensee with a companion on Saturday. When descending from the serviced hut, the fatal fall occurred on a wooden staircase. The woman could no longer catch herself and fell about 80 meters over rocky terrain until she came to rest in a ditch. “The innkeeper alerted us because he was fetched by the companion of the casualty,” said Lorenz Tragatschnig from the Ebensee mountain rescue service: “We immediately descended into the ditch with our mountain rescue doctor to prepare for the transport of the hiker with the Martin 3 emergency helicopter.”

After first aid by the innkeeper and the Ebensee mountain rescue team, the injured person was flown by the emergency helicopter to the intermediate landing site and then to the hospital. It was still unclear how badly the woman was injured on Sunday afternoon.
