The Civil Police of the state of Paraná is investigating whether it was, as suspected, a case of political intolerance, Commissioner Iane Cardoso said at a press conference.
Marcelo Arruda, a PT member and municipal agent, was celebrating his 50th birthday with a party-themed party, when Jorge Guaranho, a federal prison police officer, broke into the celebration.
The murder of Arruda by the Bolsonarista provoked the reaction of the former president, Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva, who directly targeted the president, Jair Bolsonaro, for deploying “a hate speech stimulated by an irresponsible president”.
“Our colleague Marcelo Arruda celebrated his 50th birthday with family and friends, in peace, in Foz do Iguaçu. Affiliated with the Workers’ Party, his party had the theme of the PT and hope for the future; with the joy of a father who she just had another daughter,” Lula said on social media.
And he continued: “A person, out of intolerance, threatened him and then shot him, who defended himself and prevented a greater tragedy. Two families lost their parents. The children were orphaned, including those of the aggressor. My feelings and solidarity to the family , friends and colleagues of Marcelo Arruda”.
Beyond condemning the act, he also had words for the murderer’s family. “I also ask for understanding and solidarity with the relatives of José da Rocha Guaranho, who lost a father and a husband due to a hate speech stimulated by an irresponsible president“, he said, referring to the messages of violence issued by Bolsonaro.

Video images show the sequence of events that ended with the death of arruda and with guaranho admitted to a hospital in a “stable” state, under the custody of the Military Police, Cardoso explained.
Guaranho arrived around 11:40 p.m. on Saturday at the party where, apparently, songs alluding to Bolsonaro were being heard, Cardoso said.
According to testimonies, he added, the policeman shouted phrases in support of the far-right president, and after threatening him with a gun in his hand, he left the party saying he would return.
“When the police returned to the premises, the tragedy occurred,” Cardoso said.
Arruda “tried to defend himself” with the regulation weapon he had in his car, according to the PT, which considered the militant’s reaction to arrest Guaranho a “heroic act.”
“We reject any kind of support for those who practice violence against opponents,” Bolsonaro tweeted in the late afternoon.
“I ask these types of people, for consistency, to change sides and support the left, which has an undeniable history of violent episodes,” he added.
Earlier, Lula also targeted his political rival, in a note of regret in which he expressed solidarity with the relatives of the militant and with those of Guaranho, “who lost a father and a husband due to a hate speech stimulated by a president irresponsible,” he said.
Pamela Silva, Arruda’s wife, told the Globo network that it is “extreme stupidity” to lose her husband to “ridiculous extremism.”
The PT warned about the “growth of political violence in the country”, polarized between right and left in the face of the presidential election in October, which will be defined between Bolsonaro and Lula.
“Any person driven mad by this project of death and destruction becomes an aggressor or a murderer,” deplored the PT.
