Corona and lack of gas: is the Munich Oktoberfest shaking?

No room for doubt – two months before the Munich Oktoberfest, the Oktoberfest hosts are showing pure confidence: “Yes, the Wiesn 2022 will take place!” Said host spokesman Peter Inselkammer on Monday evening in Munich at the presentation of the traditional host mug. “The guests all want to come. The reservation requests are enormous.” The beer has been brewed, most of the staff has been recruited, and the tents are being erected.

“We want the festival to take place,” says the second spokesman for the host, Christian Schottenhamel. It makes no sense to think about all eventualities now, the hosts say in unison. They don’t assume that the impending gas crisis could spell doom for the folk festival. “I can’t imagine the gas being turned off for eating and drinking,” says Schottenhamel. This year, however, the innkeepers will forego gas-powered radiant heaters.

“There will be solutions”

According to the city of Munich, almost 201,000 cubic meters of gas and around 2.9 million kilowatt hours of electricity were consumed at the festival in 2018 – the latter corresponds to the annual requirements of 1,200 households, the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” recently calculated.

However, Wiesn city councilor Anja Berger (Greens) does not believe that the festival could fail due to the lack of energy. “I believe there will be solutions.” The Munich economics officer and festival director Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU) remains optimistic despite rising incidences and urgent energy issues. “We are preparing for the Wiesn to take place”.

The decision that the Oktoberfest should take place in 2022 was announced by Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) at the end of April. At the beginning of June, the city of Munich also announced how much the hosts would charge for the traditional beer (one liter). The price should be between 12.60 and 13.80 euros, i.e. 15.77 percent higher than at the last Wiesn in 2019. The Oktoberfest was canceled for two years due to corona.
