The Askö offer in Linz is a particularly good idea, especially during the holidays, when many children spend hours in front of their computer, mobile phone or TV set: The association “Hobby Horsing OÖ” offers on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. near the Heilhamer Park in Linz-Urfahr hobby horse riding lessons in the marked square. Elements from equestrian sports are imitated – from dressage to jumping and fast-paced team games.
Children from the age when they start school are taught by the psychologist and riding instructor Lydia Neussl. The little ones are also physically challenged and gently encouraged to exercise. “When you work out with a sense of community, dexterity, tact, jumping power and self-confidence are strengthened. Even those who are reluctant to exercise will find an incentive to exercise here,” says the trainer.
“Rental horses” for the ride
A monthly course (four 60-minute training units) costs 48 euros plus a one-time fee of 12 euros for the annual association. It can be entered at the beginning of each month. You can bring your own hobby horse – but there are also “well-behaved rental horses”, says Neussl with a smile.
The respective fitness level of the children is addressed individually. For everyone who needs a little break in between, the trainer spreads out a picnic blanket as a retreat. There the girls and boys can pass the time with a cuddly toy horse, a horse book or other toys.
With specially developed exercises such as “sniffing the scent of horses” and “shaking mane” the children learn to really relax. At the same time, the “riding students” practice daring to do something. “It takes courage when you ride through public space with a hobby horse. ‘Hobby Horsing’ is a way of life: It strengthens self-confidence,” says the riding instructor.
