Brazil wants to establish itself with Russia and promised to buy all the fuel possible

Without giving further details and reticent to the media that insisted on the statement, the foreign minister remarked: “We have to make sure we have enough diesel for Brazilian agribusiness and, of course, for Brazilian drivers.”

Franca justified the purchase decision on how “safe and reliable” Russia is, something that the Government of the South American country prioritizes in that objective of acquiring the resource.

“Brazil is looking to buy everything we can” from Russia,” he said, without giving more details about when or under what delivery scheme.

It was also unclear how he will be able to buy Russian diesel without receiving Western sanctions imposed on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

“Russia is a strategic partner of Brazil. We are partners in BRICS,” he said, referring to the group that Brazil makes up of Russia, India, China and South Africa.

“We depend heavily on the export of fertilizers from Russia and also from Belarus. And of course Russia is a big supplier of oil and gas. You can ask Germany about that. You can ask Europe about that. So in Brazil we have a shortage of this,” he said.

Bolsonaro and Putin add business

Both presidents spoke at the end of last month at the BRICS summit and agreed that Russia send Brazil “uninterruptedly” fertilizers for “food security,” Bolsonaro said.

Through a press release, the Kremlin specified: “Vladimir Putin stressed that Russia is committed to fulfilling its obligations to ensure the uninterrupted supply of Russian fertilizers to Brazilian farmers.”

With this agreement, Putin called for “restoring the architecture of free trade in food products and fertilizers, collapsed by Western sanctions” against Russia.
