This was due to a mix-up over permission to land in the Maldives, according to airport officials.
“Their passports were stamped and they boarded the special air force flight,” an official told the AFP news agency.
After arriving in the Maldives, a group of islands located southeast of Sri Lanka, in the Indian Ocean, the president was taken in a vehicle to a site that was not revealed for security reasons.
The president has not resigned yet.
After a crowd took his residence infuriated by the economic crisis and product shortages in the country, the head of state had promised that his resignation would be official this Wednesday, something that many anxiously await.
“To ensure a peaceful transition, the President said he would tender his resignation on July 13,” the legislator announced in a televised statement, after the prime minister and former rival of the president, Ranil Wickremesinghe, made his resignation available to give rise to a government of national unity.
The entire country was submerged in protests that filled the main avenues and central squares to request the resignation of the entire Executive.
It is that Sri Lanka has been with electricity cuts for months, long queues to buy fuel and a record price hike, which generated massive riots.
The government declared a moratorium on its foreign debt for US$51 billion and, according to its authorities, it needs some US$6 billion in aid from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and from countries such as India and China to get ahead during the next six months.
